The door opens quietly. Arthur does not stir, keeping his face pressed into Gwen’s mess of hair, and shifting his stance only slightly. Preparing himself for the blow.
If it was good news, Merlin would’ve bounded out with cheers and grins.
Gwen seems to know too, and shudders, her face still in his neck. And even though he is losing feeling in his arms, he squeezes her again.
She digs her nails into his shoulder blades, holding on.
Merlin puts a hand on his shoulder – another on Gwen’s. There’s another silence, before he can hear one of Gwen’s ladies start to sob, and the other to gasp, murmuring her disbelief.
“I want you both to know, I did everything that I – ” Merlin starts to say, his voice hoarse with unshed tears.
Gwen’s shaking becomes uncontrollable. Someone starts to keen. And somehow, they’ve both ended up on the floor, and there are tears on his face, but he doesn’t know if it’s from Guinevere, or from himself.
I cried. CRIED. CRRRRIIIIEEED.
